At the moment we are working through our Presentations that we hope to upload to our Blog. Our rich task is as follows:
Present a visual project that shows your understanding of how history has made us who we are.

(Kidspeak- Choose one thing from the past and show how it has evolved in the present. What might this look like in the future?)
We have brainstormed and talked about what this may look like. Whaea spoke to us and worked with us through Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and we are using what we have learned, what we think and where we are now. (Using our knowledge of the Treaty, and our knowledge of our whanau and who we are)

Reading Strategies

Predicting
Predicting is a helpful reading strategy as it helps us think about what to expect when we read.
What we know already (our prior knowledge) helps us to predict.

When we predict we can use the
• Title
• Front and back covers
• Blurb
• Pictures, or diagrams
• Table of contents
We can think about the
• Topic
• Author
• Text form (for example narrative, newspaper report, recount)
Good readers keep making predictions and adjusting them all through their reading.

Traditional Whare

This Whare is like the ones we have been learning about. Did you know that some Maori whanau back in the old days had more than one whare? And that most of their whare were old? Once the British had their modern houses, housing for Maori changed too.

This week we continued to work on our past/present presentations, we are excited about what we are learning and what we will be sharing. Once our profile photo is completed it will be on our blog, exciting!

Ko enei tamariki e piki ana ki runga mo a ratou mohiotanga i nga rorohiko. Kei te mahi ratou nga mahi mo te Tiriti (Tohu nui) o Waitangi. These tamariki are expressing their knowledge with computers. They are currently working on their Heritage presentations and these encompass their understandings of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Blogging team

We have agreed to our job descriptions (yes, Whaea said we needed them!)
The blogging team this week are Rosa, Abel, Lucy and Miro. We decide which work we will pulish onto our blog, and then we decide what order we want to put it. We are taking our job very seriously because we are excited to be able to do this. We are working well with our Interacive Whiteboard too, loving being able to create a page, write up our research questions and be appreciated as a class!

We have an interactive whiteboard in our classroom and we have been using it to post our thoughts about the Treaty of Waitangi.
We also have been using it to look at our classmates writing and edit work together. We think this is cool because we get to be teachers and we are getting better at not being shy to do this stuff.

He aha nga mea wera..what's hot??

Well, what can we say..
we have had 3 people who have been lucky enough to be our "Whetu o te Wiki"- Stars of the Week..they were Lucy Davies, David de Thierry and Abel Johnston.
Our class this year consists of Year 5 and 6 students, and we are lucky enough to have 3 classes in our syndicate. Our Syndicate is Te Pouahi- we are a bi lingual unit who is passionate about learning!
This term we are involved in swimming, music, drama, Suter visits, Life education Van to name a few. Over the next few weeks, groups of students will be uploading mahi from our akomanga for yout to look at.
We are currently studying the Treaty of Waitangi and are having lots of fun researching key people who are part of our history.
We are also learning to be SMART!

Well it has been a long time since we have been in here, we have been up to date in getting things on our kids achieving page within our school website, now we have to keep concentrating on our blog. We do have different blogging teams and had remembered that we haven't put lots of things on!

Na Te Whanau o Te Pouahi

Matariki

We celebrated Matariki with our younger class, Te Pouahi 16. This was a great time to celebrate and reflect on our lives and the lives of those around us.We had a shared kai and celebrated togetherness.

Kia ora ano te whanau

Well, we have had a great start to the new term! We welcomed back Isabella who had been on holiday in Italy with her whanau. Isabella shared some of the great things that she did while she was on holiday and also told us what it was like going to an Italian school! Ka tau ke!

Our tamariki have been busy with making a powerpoint with a song and presenting it during a school assembly. Their willingness to take on ICT responsibilities is wonderful, ka wani ke!

Maori Language Week was celebrated with our Tamariki teaching other students how do do the poi, the rakau and string games. we celebrated our mahi by having a shared kai( paraoa parai!!)

Totara Syndicate had a hangi, this was popular for the whole school, so much in fact the kai was all gone!

Whaea Manna is doing well back in Japan. She keeps in touch regularly and will have some photos to put on the site soon...

Also we will be sharing some myths that the tamariki from Te Pouahi 15 have written and some photos of their fabulous art work.

Whanau Day, 2007

Welcome to Term 2!

Kia ora ano te Whanau

Well, Term Two is here and the tamariki are working hard and fast! We have a lot to look forward to this term.

The first week was full of Anzac work, from looking at a service medal to some students attending the Dawn Parade in Nelson. This unit was a great opportunity for the tamariki to appreciate the darker side of history and to understand what Freedom"actually is.

"The Forest", is our Sustainability focus and we have talked about our main idea throughout the school, "The Future starts now!"

I am looking forward to more people reading our site and leaving comments.
