Electric fishing

Electric fishing!

We went Electric fishing on the side of the Maitai River (by Riverside Pools)
Thanks to Matua Martin (Rosa's Dad), we were able to see DOC Martin Rutledge and Reece working their magic in the water.
They were wearing protective gear, and waders, and had a back pack wich held the electric currents to send through the rod to stun the stream life for us to look at.
The ducks were'nt too happy about this, and quickly cleared themselves from where we were based.

Did you know.....
New Zealand has 35 native fish species, yet(and no, trout are NOT native!).
People are astounded to learn that ‘whitebait’ are the juveniles of five native species, including some that are threatened.

This is how you can help our native fish.....

Protect streamside vegetation

fence off stream edges from stock

plant alongside streams to create a shady cool habitat.

culverts need to be fish-friendly – native fish can’t jump!

Protect wetlands
